New apprenticeship scheme starts

A NEW scheme set to offer young people in Warrington the opportunity to apply for an apprenticeship launched this week – National Apprenticeship Week.
The initiative will see Warrington Borough Council working with local organisations to offer apprenticeship opportunities, helping to double the number of apprenticeships the council offers from 70 to more than 140.
Funded by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, the apprenticeships will be open to any 16-24 year old who is not in education, employment or training and living within the following qualifying areas: Bewsey and Whitecross, Burtonwood and Winwick, Fairfield and Howley, Latchford East, Oakwood, Orford, Poplars and Hulme and Poulton North.
There will be a range of apprenticeship vacancies, including retail, customer service, ICT and business administration.
Council leader Terry O’Neill (picture) visited Warrington Collegiate yesterday to get a taste of what brickwork and plumbing apprentices do, and tomorrow (Thursday) he will be at Jobcentre Plus to see first hand the kind of work young people are doing when he shadows two apprentices.
Cllr O’Neill said: “It is very good news that we are in a position to offer more apprenticeships than ever to Warrington’s young people thanks to this new initiative.
“An apprenticeship provides a vital kickstart to a young person’s career and is an investment in their future. In Warrington we are continuing to do all we can to ensure the town’s young people have the opportunities they deserve in education, training and employment.”
An up-to-date list of vacancies is available from the Community Employment, Learning and Skills Team on 01925 442 376 or by emailing [email protected] or by visiting www.warrington.gov.uk

  1. It’s good to hear that the council are doing their bit and offering much needed apprenticeships to young people as they are very few available these days. BUT…. can someone please explain WHY it states that they will ONLY be available to “16-24 year old who are NOT in education, employment or training” and who live within the specified QUALIFYING AREAS of Bewsey and Whitecross, Burtonwood and Winwick, Fairfield and Howley, Latchford East, Oakwood, Orford, Poplars and Hulme and Poulton North. ????????? Surely that is discriminating against youngsters from other areas in Warrington who are just as eager and desperate to find and apply for apprenticeships and also discriminating against those who may be in college working hard and doing full/part time courses in their chosen fields of work/subjects until they too hopefully manage to get an apprenticeship. Seems very unfair to me.

  2. I agree, it seems to be saying that if you live in Latchford East you are ok, but not if you livve in Latchford West, which they all seem to think of as part of Walton!!! A scheme such as this should be available to all in the age group who are resident across the borough. Anyone feel like taking out a case for discrimination?
