A TURF-cutting ceremony takes place tomorrow (Friday) to launch work on a new £4.8 million Warrington school.
The Mayor, Cllr Mike Biggin, will cut the turf on the site of the new Great Sankey Primary School, just off Liverpool Road, at 11am to mark the start of construction.
Cllr Colin Froggatt, the borough council’s executive member for children and young people, headteacher Jim Courtney and local councillors will also attend.
The new school premises will be near to its current location and Seddon Construction aims to have it completed by October.
It will be a modern building designed for education in the 21st century. Low energy use will be a key feature, along with spacious classrooms and a range of inspirational educational facilities.
The new building will replace a number of smaller existing buildings, many of which are in poor condition and no longer fit for purpose.
But the original Victorian building which fronts Liverpool Road will be retained and put to good use. Its new purpose is yet to be decided but work has begun to look at a range of possibilities.
Cllr Froggatt (right) said: “It’s fantastic that work is set to begin on the new buildings for Great Sankey Primary School. The new premises have been specially designed to be fit for education in the 21st century and environmentally friendly. I look forward to coming back to see the new school when it’s completed.”
Seddon managing director Jonathan Seddon said: “Our team is very excited to be starting work on this modern new building which will provide pupils with state-of-the-art learning facilities.
“The company has a strong track record in building new school premises and in sustainable technology and we are delighted to be bringing this expertise to the project.”
The company aims to use local labour where possible. It will also arrange site visits for pupils and give them health and safety themed talks.
