FORMER Wire forward Mike Cooper has announced his retirement from the game on medical advice with immediate effect.
Cooper, aged 36, who surprisingly left his hometown club to join arch-rivals Wigan Warriors, pulled on the primrose and blue 272 times, scoring 22 tries.
He played for Warrington Wolves in two separate spells in the Super League and spent time away from Warrington at the Castleford Tigers on loan in the Super League. Cooper has also played for the St. George Illawarra Dragons in the NRL, finishing his career at Wigan, where he played 19 times scoring one try.
Announcing his decision on social media Cooper said: “Unfortunately it’s time for me to retire from Rugby League following medical advice due to a head injury sustained a few months back.
Finding out the news that I’d need to call it a day has made me reflect on what our sport has brought to my life and that can never be taken away.
“It’s not the trophies or medals that matter when it’s over its each moment of commitment, sacrifice and then happiness that brings to everyone else around you when you achieve your goals.
“I will miss more than anything the time with all of my team mates and coaches over the years and most importantly to me the moments when you are giving 100% for each other as group to win is something I’ll never forget.
“Thank you to everyone at Warrington Wolves, Castleford, St George Illawarra, Wigan Warriors and England Rugby league you all made my dreams come true.
“A special mention to all my family and friends, my parents who have supported my career through the ups and down that sport brings.
“My boys George and Oscar, seeing you smile and cheer in the stands during a game, singing the national anthem and then celebrating with the team is just priceless.
“It’s time to recover, focus on a new stage in my life but I’ll always carry with me all the great moments playing the game has brought me.
“Thank you everyone.”
