AFTER trading in Penketh for more than half a century, popular family-run village bakery Sexton’s is on the market.

Current owner Phil Sexton, has decided to retire, while his wife Sara focuses on their bakery at Lymm.

Announcing the decision to place the bakery on the market Phil said: “For the past 53 years, our family has had the privilege of being part of the Penketh community, and what a joy it has been.
“However, having reached the age of 66, enjoying a couple of years of semi-retirement, I (Phil Sexton) have decided to retire, and although my younger wife Sara will continue to run the bakery in Lymm, she has decided it would be too much to continue in it’s present format, and so with heavy hearts we have decided to downsize which will result in the sale of our Penketh branch.

“Our Penketh branch is being sold as a going concern, and in the meantime, our wonderful team will continue to serve you there six days a week, and from our Lymm site seven days a week.
“While it’s bittersweet to close this chapter, we will be continuing with all our full range of products from our bakery and retail shop in Lymm.
“We are profoundly grateful to our loyal customers who have supported our Penketh branch over the past five decades, and we extend a heartfelt thank you for being part of this journey with us. We would like to assure our customers we will try to find a buyer who will continue to supply and support Penketh, Great Sankey, and the surrounding area in the way we have for five decades.”

Earliest recollections of the 5th generation family business go back to the early 18th Century to Phil’s great great grandmother who had a small corner shop at Lymm typical of that era selling all sorts of consumables and, with the aid of a brick built natural fuel fired oven, use to bake her own bread to retail. This shop then passed down to his great grandmother who continued to bake her own bread.
