Woods free-kick not enough as late goal holds Yellows to draw

A LATE goal hurt managerless Warrington Town for a second successive week, as they had to settle for a point at home to Spennymoor Town.

After bowing out of the FA Cup to an injury-time winner which ultimately resulted in the resignation of Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley, they conceded in the 89th minute to Issac Fletcher to earn the visitors a deserved point.

It was a largely uninspiring game, lit up 20 minutes from time by a Connor Woods free-kick, curled home from all of 25-yards, his third direct free-kick goal of the season.

Glen Taylor blazed over from a good position in the box as Spennymoor started the better, but the other half chances of the first half fell to the hosts.

Matty McDonald brought the ball down well and forced the first save of the match out of Brad James, who later saved comfortably from Tom Hannigan’s header. Jay Harris clipped a shot just over the bar and then a good block by Michael Ledger denied Gez Sithole.

Spennymoor stepped up in the second half and within three minutes of the restart, Taylor forced a smart stop at his near post from Town keeper Dan Atherton.

But neither side appeared capable of creating a clear cut opportunity, and it was only after Joe Rodwell-Grant was hauled down by Ledger that Warrington were given the chance to break the deadlock. Just as he did last week, Woods stepped up and found the back of the net, although James did get at least something on it in his vain attempt to keep it out.

It looked like the Yellows would head in to a two-week break off the back of a much needed win ahead of their new managerial appointment, but it wasn’t to be, as Fletcher picked up a loose ball in the box, created space to get a shot away through bodies and Atherton scrambling to his right just couldn’t keep it out.
