Warrington Remembers 84th anniversary of Battle of Britain Day

A special service takes place today marking the 84th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, a pivotal moment in World War II when the Royal Air Force defended the United Kingdom against relentless Luftwaffe airstrikes.

It led to a decisive victory for the RAF and came the day after the worst war-time atrocity to impact Warrington, when a German bomber dropped bombs on a fete at Thames Board Mills, killing 16 innocent victims and injuring many more.

Many airman and ground crews were killed during the Battle of Britain, including pilots who joined the RAF from across the globe to help support the UK in its fight against Hitler’s Germany.

Today a service of remembrance organised by 1330 Warrington Squadron Air Training Corps – Royal Air Force Air Cadets will be held to commemorate the determination, courage and sacrifice of those that fought for the independence of our nation at St Elphins Church, Church Street (opposite Sainsburys) at 3 pm.

“Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”
