Town centre road closures for Warrington Mela parade

VARIOUS road closures will be in force around the town centre this Sunday (Sept 15) for the annual Warrington Mela parade.

The closures will be in place between 10.30 am and 12:30 pm for the parade as it sets off from Warrington town hall, heading through the town centre to Palmyra Square.

Warrington’s multicultural festival, Warrington Mela, will bring a spectacular blend of street theatre, dance, music, food and global cultures to the heart of the town.

This year’s festival is more ambitious and inclusive than ever thanks to a National Lottery Project Grant from Arts Council England. Warrington Borough Council will deliver the event in partnership with Warrington Ethnic Communities Association (WECA), Culture Warrington and with the generous support of Warrington BID.
Additional funding from the council’s Community Investment Fund (CIF), Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, and the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire has been secured to engage with Warrington’s harder-to-reach communities.

The council has made an order on the occasion of the above-mentioned event, no cart, carriage, motor car, lorry or any other vehicle (excepting vehicles taking part in the event, Police, Ambulance, Fire Service vehicles and Mail Carts) and no horses or other animal will be allowed to remain in or travel along or over any of the under mentioned streets between the hours of 10.30 am and 12.30 pm on Sunday 15 September 2024.

The streets listed below will only be closed to traffic between the above hours to allow for the safe passage of the parade:

Bold Street Between Sankey Street and Suez Street
Cairo Street Between Sankey Street and Egypt Street
Egypt Street
Palmyra Square North
Sankey Street Between Legh Street and Bold Street
Springfield Street

Bicycles and Tricycles are included in the term “vehicle” and must not be ridden through any of the above named streets during the hours specified. Any person wilfully acting in contravention of the above Order will be liable to a penalty not exceeding £400.
