Wolves beat Saints to keep top two hopes alive

WARRINGTON Wolves kept up their hopes of a top-two spot in Super League with a 16-2 win over St Helens.

Matty Ashton’s solo try put them in command as they led 12-2 at the break, before a try-less second half that saw just two Josh Thewlis penalty goals.

Both sides had men sin-binned early on, before Ashton danced through and scored in the corner.

Jordy Crowther bundled over from close range to give Warrington a 10-point half-time advantage, with only a solitary penalty from Jon Bennison to show for St Helens efforts.

Following Wigan’s win over Hull KR on Friday night, Warrington are two points adrift of the second-placed Robins with two more rounds to play before the play-offs.

Finishing in the top two guarantees a week off and a home semi-final, while finishing third would set up a home play-off game against the sixth-placed side.

That could well be St Helens, who sit fifth, but are in danger of missing out on the Super League play-offs for the first time ever.
