Revamp for women's cricket

THE Warrington-based Cheshire women’s cricket team will be playing in a revamped league this summer.
The English Cricket Board (ECB) has radically altered the format of the Women’s County Championship with each division now comprising nine teams and automatic promotion scrapped.
Cheshire are still in Division Two but their opponents will not all be the same.
Teams will now play the others in their division once only.
The top two in Division Two at the end of the regular season will contest a divisional final, with the winners going forward to a promotion play-off against one of the bottom two from Division One. The bottom two in Division Two will also play off against each other, before the loser of that match is required to play a top side from Division Three in a further play-off.
Cheshire played most of their games at Warrington Sports Club, at Walton Lea, last year and it is hoped they will do so again this year.
Jenny Halstead has accepted an offer to return to Cheshire, for whom she last played in 2008, as captain.
She has captained the England Academy team over several years and scored 457 runs for Middlesex in the first division in 2011. She will succeed Lauren Griffiths, captain for the last five years.
In the meantime, Cheshire are looking for a dedicated team manager.
This vacancy is seen as an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to build experience in the women’s game and work closely with the captain and coach to help Cheshire achieve their full potential.
Anyone interested should contact the CWCC chairman Helen Smith at [email protected]
Cheshire fixtures for the coming season are: May 6: Warwickshire (H); May 27: Worcestershire (A); June 3: Staffordshire (H); June 4: Devon (H); July 14: Lancashire (A); July 15: Netherlands (H); July 22: Durham (H); August 5: Wales (A)
First round of play-offs is August 26 and the second round of play-offs is September 2.
The Twenty20 Championship, with Cheshire now in North and Midlands Division Three in this competition, will be played on July 30 and 31.
