Warrington Rugby Union Football Club (RUFC) is gearing up for a monumental celebration as it reaches its 100-year milestone this August. From humble beginnings to becoming a cornerstone of the local community, Warrington RUFC has an illustrious history marked by passion, camaraderie, and a deep love for the sport.

What’s Coming Up

As Warrington RUFC celebrates its centenary, it is also looking to the future with optimism and ambition. The club aims to build on its legacy by continuing to promote rugby at all levels as it gets ready to compete in the upcoming season.

Aside from celebrating 100 years of WRFUC, the club will be continuing to be a community hub where patrons can socialise and watch big rugby tournaments such as the upcoming Rugby Championship.

A Century of Rugby

Founded in 1924, Warrington RUFC has grown from a small group of rugby enthusiasts into a formidable club with a strong legacy. The club’s first match was against Bury Club on April 21, 1922, at their original ground on Chester Road, drawing 1,200 spectators.

Despite World War II interruptions, the club remained active, thanks to the dedication of its members. Post-war, the club faced rebuilding in the 1950s but maintained high spirits and community involvement.

In the decades that followed, Warrington RUFC has continued to focus on youth development and community engagement, producing talented players and winning various league titles and cups. The club remains a significant part of the Warrington community.

The club’s commitment to developing young talent is evident in its thriving junior and youth programs, which continue to inspire the next generation of rugby stars.

Centenary Gala Dinner

The centenary celebrations promise to be a grand affair, with a series of events lined up to honour the club’s history and achievements.

The festivities will kick off with a fabulous Gala Dinner on Saturday, 14th September 2024, at the Park Royal Hotel. This event will bring together past and present members, supporters, and local dignitaries for a memorable evening.

The evening will be hosted by the revered John Bentley, known for his illustrious career across both rugby union and rugby league. He earned his place in rugby union history by playing for England and, later, the prestigious British and Irish Lions. His switch to rugby league saw him representing Great Britain, showcasing his talent for both codes of the sport.

To top the evening off, the guest speaker will be the legendary Andy Powell. His career highlights include memorable performances for the Welsh national team and the British and Irish Lions. Powell’s insights and stories from his career, including the infamous golf buggy incident, will undoubtedly captivate the audience.

Warrington RUFC invites everyone to join in the centenary celebrations and be part of this historic milestone. Whether you are a long-time supporter or new to the club, the festivities offer a unique opportunity to connect with the rich heritage of Warrington RUFC and celebrate its contributions to the sport and the community.
