Winter's glimpse of village church

0

WINTER strips the leaves from the trees in Lady Lane, Croft, near Warrington and offers this glimpse of the 179-year-old Christ Church.
On the ground, the fallen leaves provide a colourful carpet.
In the summer, when the trees are fully clothed, passers by could easily miss this attractive place of worship – despite it being built on what is probably the highest point in the village.
The church was built in 1832-33 on a site chosen because it lay mid-point between Croft and Risley, the two communities it was intended to serve. The sandstone for the building was brought from Delph Lane by the local farming community.
Cost of construction was £2,667, of which a Parliamentary Grant provided £1,457, with the balance raised by the parish. The land for the church and churchyard was given by a Mr Samuel Barrow and the church was consecrated by the Bishop of Cheshire on November 29, 1833.
Two stone pillars stand by the north gate of the churchyard which are reputed to have been the sides of the Croft stocks.
Today, Christ Church is linked with Newchurch Parish Church, Culcheth.
