COUNCIL chiefs at Warrington look set to award a contract for the supply of a healthy weight programme for children and young people – as 35 per cent of 11-year-olds in the borough are overweight.

Members of the borough council’s cabinet are being recommended to approve the move at their meeting next Monday (July 8).

A report to be presented to the meeting by Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, cabinet member for health, wellbeing and social care, says there is currently limited provision of weight management offers to children, young people and their families in Warrington

There is a universal, digital service provided by NHS Bridgewater, but no community offer for children and young people who have been identified as being above a healthy weight.
The report states: “Childhood obesity and excess weight are significant health issues and a life-course issue for children and their families.
“With 35 per cent of Warrington children above a healthy weight by the age of 11, additional provision to offer further weight management support is essential.”
The document adds: “Obesity is associated with poor psychological and emotional health and many children experience bullying linked to their weight.
“Children living with obesity are more likely to become adults living with obesity, with a higher risk of morbidity, disability and premature mortality from a range of conditions including hypertension, heart disease stroke, type 2 diabetes and several cancers.
“Once established, obesity is difficult to treat, so prevention and early intervention are imperative.”
