188th Warrington Walking Day set to get under way

MORE than 20 churches, schools and other groups were set to take to the streets today for what is believed to be the 188th Warrington Walking Day.

Only World Wars and Covid have stopped the annual Warrington Walking Day Walk of Witness from going ahead so the weather forecast of scattered shows and cloudy skies did little to deter the walkers.

The hot, humid weather of recent days was predicted to end, with temperatures falling to the average for this time of year.
As usual, the procession was, set to start from the Golden Gates outside the Town Hall at 10.30 am. But before that, the contingents from the various churches and other groups taking part were converging on the town centre to gather on the Town Hall lawn.
As usual, the procession will be headed by walkers from Warrington Parish Church.

The Mayor, Cllr Steve Wright was ready to take the salute from a dais in Sankey Street, outside the Golden Gates. Last year he took part in the procession as he did not take over the Mayoral chains of office until the following day.
Warrington Walking Day was originally founded by a former Rector of Warrington as a counter-attraction to Newton Races which, he believed, were attracting many townsfolk to gambling and drink.
Newton Races died out years ago – but the great Walk of Christian Witness, Warrington Walking Day, continues.
While the Walk is in progress, many town centre streets will be closed to traffic. Some businesses will close for the day. But most shops will be open as usual after the procession has ended.
