Planning bid for new school

PLANS for a long-awaited new school to replace one of Warrington’s oldest and most outdated primary school buildings are to be put to borough council planning chiefs.
The scheme will involve demolition of the existing Great Sankey Primary School, in Liverpool Road, Great Sankey and construction of a innovative new school on an adjoining site currently used as a rugby pitch and wooded area by the nearby Penketh High School.
But one locally “listed” Victorian school building will be retained and the council intends to either sell or let it for an appropriate alternative use.
The present school building is acknowledged to be inadequate, of poor quality and outdated design and with maintenance problems.
Planners considered re-building the school on its present site, but this was ruled out because relocation during the construction work would have been prohibitively expensive.
Two nearby residents have lodged objections because of fears of increased parking on Liverpool Road, loss of woodland and damage to wildlife.
But officers say some increase in parking on a reasonable quiet section of Liverpool Road is acceptable. The school itself will have 27 parking spaces.
A multi-use games area will be provided on the primary school site to replace the high school’s rugby pitch – and Sport England are happy with proposed playing field provision.
