LYMM Parish Council has organised two special meetings in preparation for Martyn’s Law involving new safety laws following the Manchester Arena bombing atrocity which sadly claimed 22 lives in 2017.
Following the attack, the Martyn’s Law Campaign Team led by Figen Murray, the mother of one of the victims, Martyn Hett, tirelessly campaigned to introduce Martyn’s Law to Parliament.
The draft Bill is currently working its way through Parliament and the Parish Council is looking to stay one step ahead.
The aim of the proposed Bill is to increase safety. It will affect certain premises and events, requiring them to increase their preparedness for, and protection from, a terrorist attack by taking proportionate steps, depending on the size and nature of their activities. In Lymm, this includes family favourites such as Duck Race, May Queen, Transport Day and Carols from The Cross, and also larger venues such as Lymm Village Hall which has a capacity of 100 people.
Lymm Parish Council is holding two meetings inviting Lymm business, venue and event managers and organisers to get together and start to explore what changes might need to be made to prepare for the new Bill, expected in the autumn.
The Parish Council’s Events Committee Chair, Colin Oakley stated “Events and gatherings are important for the community in Lymm and the Parish Council is looking to explore the kinds of changes that venues and events might need to make when the Bill comes into effect. If you think that this effects your building, venue, or an event that you are involved in, two information and planning sessions will be held in Lymm’s Village Hall where we can all start to make the changes needed.”
