Children want parents to quit smoking

CHILDREN in Warrington are so concerned about the impact of smoking on their parent’s health that they’d go to considerable lengths to get them to give up.
Sacrifices they would make include: going without Christmas presents; giving up their pocket money and committing to complete their homework every night.
These are the findings of new research conducted on behalf of the Department of Health.
Many youngsters are so opposed to smoking they have labelled it stupid, say they will never try a cigarette and that they wish that nobody in the world smoked.
Key findings in the Warrington area include:
* Over half (53 per cent) of children with a parent who smokes say that their one wish for Christmas is that their Mum or Dad give up smoking.
* Almost all (99 per cent) children with a smoking parent wish that they would quit.
* Almost three quarters (73 per cent) of children with a smoking parent worry about the risk of their parent dying. A further 58% worry about the risk of heart disease.
*Around 95 per of children surveyed thought smoking was either stupid (49 per cent) or dangerous (46 per cent).
Ninety three per cent said they had never tried a cigarette and 86 per cent said they never would. Most would not want their own children to smoke.
A third would do without a Christmas present, more than half would give up pocket money and seven out of 10 would go to bed when told.
This research follows figures published earlier this year showing that 347 people in Warrington die each year because of smoking related diseases.
