WARRINGTON Wolves have promoted seven young players to the first-grade training squad.
Glenn Riley (prop/second row pictured right), Brad Dwyer (hooker pictured below left), Jordan Burke (fullback), James Mendeika (centre), Ben Currie (loose forward), Ben Hellewell (fullback – pictured top) and James Saltonstall (second row/centre) will progress to the first-team train-on squad from the Wolves’ successful under 20s team.
Under the guidance and management of Gary Chambers and Richard Marshall these players have developed through the club’s WolfPack to reach the required skills and standards to work alongside the first-grade squad.
WolfPack is a step on the pathway towards being involved with the first-grade and is an opportunity for Head of coaching Tony Smith and his staff to get to know the young players coming through and help to develop and improve them further at the highest level looking at various attributes of the player including: the qualities of the person, the development of the athlete, their consistency in training and weekly performances and their capacity to continually learn and develop as intelligent footballers.
This year has seen the under 20s develop and improve both as individuals and as a team winning the Rugby League Nines competition earlier this year and finishing second in the league reaching the Valvoline Cup Grand Final.
Under 20s Head Coach Richard Marshall said: “All the players above have excelled this year within our youth structure. Their development will continue and accelerate with the progression into the first-team environment. I know the players are excited to be given this opportunity to work with the senior members. I have let them know that this is where the hard work starts for them and if they are prepared for that they will get the rewards.”
Director of Youth Development John Bastian added: “The progress and development of our junior players is nurtured by the environment and culture we have at the first-grade and the academy. This is underpinned by constant education and good discipline throughout the club. If these young players continue to make the necessary sacrifice then they will all have bright futures at Warrington Wolves. We have some very talented young players at the Wolves and with patience we will see the fruit of our labour and commitment.”
