MEMBERS of the Latchford Litter Network linked up with colleagues from local Latchford employer Novelis Aluminium to form two large teams of 16 volunteers, collecting an incredible 73 bags of rubbish on Thelwall Lane.

The large and capable team thoroughly tidied Thelwall Lane for up to a mile in each direction from the factory.

This included all of Thelwall Lane from the Londis shop to Novelis and then all the way on to Woolston Eyes Nature Reserve. This included the private road section. Nook Lane to Westy Park was also tidied. The teams filled an amazing 73 bags of litter. Some larger items were removed with a truck and a forklift!

Chair of the Tuesday Litter Network team Tony Dixon said: “To our knowledge, this stretch has never been fully tidied before.
“From our team’s perspective, this has fulfilled a long-term ambition to realise the potential of a tidy and more family-friendly trail from Latchford to Woolston. This is a potential amenity for dog walkers runners and cyclists, particularly at weekends. Removing so much litter adds value to the environment around Woolston Eyes Nature Reserve.
“So this benefited people in the local community and the local environment. A real win-win.”
Tony added: “It was particularly good to link up with Novelis again as they gave us great support for the Warrington Crown Litterpick back in May (217 volunteers!)
“Both groups are connected by a common thread – recycling aluminium.

“Our litter teams have collected recycled 160,000 aluminium drinks cans (about 2 tons) in the last 14 months. This has helped the local environment and earned over £800 for litter kit.”
Novelis Latchford also recycles aluminium, but on a much larger scale – around 300 tons a day! Their cans come from all over Europe. The beauty of Aluminium is its endless recyclability.
The drink cans we recycle could become new drink cans, or body panels for Range Rover or BMW in just a few weeks.
Tony concluded: “We feel incredibly proud of what we have achieved with Novelis this week.”
