A FORMER Lymm High School pupil has been awarded a PhD at Manchester University and was presented with her Doctorate by Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, vice chancellor at the Whitworth Hall.
Helen Norman (pictured), who was born in Lymm but now lives in Manchester, was at Lymm High from 1991 to 1998 and then went on to Leeds Metropolitcan University where she achieved her BSc (Hon) in the Department of Social Studies in 2001.
She studied part time when working at Manchester University Department of Social Sciences as an administrative assistant and from 2008 successfully applied for a Doctoral Study at The Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research within the department.
Her study “An Analysis of the conditions associated with paternal involvement in childcare and housework” looked at how external conditions such as work patterns, household income, age and education, ethnicity and other aspects influence the involvement of fathers during the early informative years of children.
Helen has presented papers to international conferences in Montreal and Paris in addition to several visits to Brussels attending consultative groups. She now works within the Department of Sociology at Manchester University as a Research Associate and Assistant to Professor Fagan and will shortly be the co-author of papers published in international journals.
Her proud parents, Paul and Elisabeth Norman, still live in Lymm.
