Town Hall and various historic venues open to the public for national Heritage Open Days

WARRINGTON Town Hall and various other historic venues around the town will be open to the public during September as part of the national Heritage Open Days.

Residents are invited to go along to meet the Mayor, Cllr Steve Wright, on Saturday, September 16 and discover the building’s fascinating history as a family home, with guided tours provided free of charge, which will take around 45 minutes. Tickets can be booked via Eventbrite.

The Mayor said: “Warrington Town Hall is a place that is steeped in history and there’s so much to discover within its walls. This is a great opportunity to gain a fascinating insight into this landmark civic building and discover more about our local history. Everyone is welcome, so please join us for our special heritage day.”

Cairo Street Chapel
4 Cairo Street, Warrington, Cheshire, WA1 1ED
Discover 300 years of the history of Warrington and how the Chapel, the earliest dissenting chapel in the town, was instrumental in the area’s development. The burial grounds in this little oasis of calm contain many graves, including the those of notable local people such as the Gaskell and Monks families.

Walton Hall Open Day

Take a rare chance to explore Walton Hall and visit an exhibition showing the history of both the hall and gardens. The Estate was bought by Edward Greenall around 1814 and Walton Hall is thought to have been built in the mid-1830’s. It has a rich history but is now a thriving community facility. Volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions and activity packs will be available for children.

Guided Walks to Warrington Transporter Bridge

Visit the world’s only rail transporter bridge. Warrington Transporter Bridge, which crosses the River Mersey, is tucked away behind Warrington Bank Quay station. Marvel at this feat of engineering some 30 feet wide (9 metres), with an overall length of 339 feet (103 metres). Commissioned in 1916 it has been out of use since around 1964.

Warrington Museum of Freemasonry

Visit the newly extended Masonic Museum, with unusual masonic and other fraternal society objects. Enjoy tours of the masonic rooms, still familiar to the Freemasons of the 1930’s and learn how the Masonic Hall came about.

Bonnets to Boats; The Arts of the Inland Waterways

Artisanal Baking Demonstration
Mamars at The Old Bank, 78 Bridge Street, Warrington Town Centre, Warrington, Cheshire, WA1 2RF
Unwrap the creativity of breadmaking. Mamar’s will share the secrets of how they make and bake their breads from scratch during this talk and demonstration. You may even get to taste the results. You can also take a look at the secret basement of the Old Bank – the beautiful Grade II listed building where Mamars are based. Many aspects are unchanged, including the original Martins Bank night safe, money lift and bank vault.

Museum of Policing in Cheshire Open Day 2023
Arpley Street, Warrington, Cheshire, WA1 1LR
Take a tour of policing through the ages. This open day features museum tours, armed response and other police vehicles, police dogs, the police band and the new police drone unit. The museum is home to a huge collection of historical police artefacts, including handcuffs and shackles, murder weapons and police equipment that have been preserved from local police stations throughout Cheshire.
