Warrington Wolves confirm exit of coach Daryl Powell

WARRINGTON Wolves have parted company with head coach Daryl Powell following the 42-6 defeat to Wakefield Trinity on Sunday.

A sixth successive defeat proved to be the final straw for Powell and his assistant Ryan Sheridan, with the club confirming the pair had departed by mutual consent.

Powell arrived at the Halliwell Jones Stadium from Castleford ahead of the 2022 season, but a disastrous campaign saw the Wolves finish second bottom.

They started this season with an eight-game winning streak, but have been gradually slipping down the table in recent months, and are down to sixth after being hammered by bottom club Wakefield.

Wolves Chairman Stuart Middleton said: “We’d like to thank Daryl for his commitment and endeavours since joining the club last season but we feel the team now needs a different approach.

“Results and performances over the past 18 months have fallen short of the standard we expect and feel the club now needs to move in a new direction.

“We will now begin a thorough process to select a new Head Coach to take the club forward.

“We still firmly believe this playing group have the ability to compete at the highest level.”

Gary Chambers will take interim charge, assisted by Richard Marshall, until an appointment is made.

It followed the club’s worst run of defeats in more than 20 years. In his farewell press conference, an animated Powell was critical of his team’s performance and the attitude of some of the players.
His last interview can be read in the report below of his final game in charge at Wakefield.
