More than 4,000 sign petition but no immediate plan to introduce traffic calming at Whittle Hall after geese killed

DESPITE more than 4,000 people signing an online petition following the incident which led to geese being killed on a road at Whittle Hall, highway planners say there are no innemdiate plans to introduce traffic calming.

Instead, Warrington Borough Council has asked police to step up speed enforcement on Omega Boulevard following the incident last Saturday which resulted in at least seven geese being allegedly killed by a speeding motorist.

It was one of three incidents on the same day involving birds being killed by vehicles. In the aftermath of the incident, an online petition was launched which has now been signed by more than 4,100 people. Warrington South MP Andy Carter also backed residents calling for action.

In response to the incident and the online petition a Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: “We are shocked and appalled at the images of the motorist who appears to drive at and kill a number of geese on Omega Boulevard and would encourage anyone with any information, CCTV or dashcam footage which may aid the investigation to contact Cheshire Police.

“We are also aware of a petition online calling for further traffic calming measures on Omega Boulevard. This road is classed as an A road and designed to serve the distribution centres, providing the main access to Junction 8 of the M62. The recent closure on Omega Boulevard for utilities works to be undertaken would appear unfortunately to have encouraged the geese to sit in or gather on the carriageway.

“When the traffic management requirements for this road were reviewed, the speed limit of 30mph and signage were correct. Due to there being a low number of collisions in the area, there is no immediate plan to introduce additional traffic calming measures. Anyone who witnesses speeding should report it to the police so that action can be taken.

“When improvement works were carried out on Omega Boulevard, including improvements at its junction with Lingley Green Avenue, a layby was installed to enable the police to undertake speed enforcement. This happens on a regular basis and we have requested for this to be increased following this incident.”

A 31-year-old man from Liverpool has since been arrested in connection with the incident and has been released pending further investigations.
