New school will cost £4.5 million

A NEW school project at Warrington, which fell victim to the Government’s spending axe, looks set to go ahead at a cost of £4.5 million.
The new building will replace Great Sankey Primary School, which is said to have poor quality accommodation in an extremely poor condition.
Members of the borough council’s executive board will be asked to commit to funding the project next week and approve a contractor.
Originally, it was intended to build the new school at the same time as a new Penketh High School was built under the last Government’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.
Building the two schools at the same time would provide good value for money and a well designed campus, removing the current sprawl of buildings.
But the new Government scrapped BSF as part of its spending cuts and the plan for a new Penketh High was cancelled.
However, funding for the primary school has been retained so the scheme can go ahead as a stand-alone project.
The new school will be built on part of the high school’s playing fields and proposals have been developed to offset the loss of playing field space with an upgrade of existing sports facilities at the high school. The two schools, parents and local residents have been consulted
An existing public right of way through the high school grounds will have to be diverted.
Five contractors have submitted tenders for the project.

  1. Eh ?? Why are the exec board having to vote to ‘commit’ to funding the project next week etc when they have already commissioned Mouchel’s property team (2020 Liverpool) through a competitive tender process, to provide the various services including ‘structural engineering, building services engineering, acoustic engineering, flood engineering, site waste management and CDM coordinator services for the complete replacement of the existing school on an adjacent site.’

Mouchel also won the tender bid to provide various services for Chapelford Primary School , Ravenbank Primary School , Bruche County Primary School and ‘The Horizons Building’ . What happenes if the Exec Board says ‘ NO’ not that they will of course (thankfully 😉 ) Maybe I’m just reading it all wrong as usual but their website news is dated Feb 2011 and although the funding was in question for a while this decision had already been made so nothing new and no need for another vote surely? Probably just me getting confused though……. http://www.2020liverpool.co.uk/news/article.aspx?id=1938

  2. I don’t think that you are confused at all. If the funding for the Primary School has been retained then why the need for a further waste of time and a new vote by WBC next week?
