THE Warrington North Labour Party has announced Una Gillham, former lecturer, charity worker and community volunteer as the Labour candidate in the upcoming Poulton North By-election taking place on July 27.

The by-election was called following the sad death of community advocate, Lay Minister, and Labour Councillor Diana Friend, who sadly passed away in May.

Una, is passionate about education, housing and tackling inequality. Volunteering for a Warrington based social housing scrutiny panel and other community-based organisations, she’s keen to make sure local people are listened to and their voices are heard.

Una said: “I’m proud to call Warrington my home, and I love our communities across Padgate, Fearnhead, Longbarn, Cinnamon Brow, and Houghton Green.
“It’s an honour to be selected as Labour’s candidate for Poulton North and be given the opportunity to represent residents at the Town Hall.
“Diana worked tirelessly in her community, from her work with our local churches and Padgate Walking Day, to representing the town as the Deputy Mayoress Consort.
“Her shoes will be hard to fill, but I promise to do my best and continue to stand up for what matters to our communities.
“The Tories claim to have our best interests at heart, but it’s all for show.
“The Conservative Government sets planning policy, the Conservatives create the rules, the Conservatives set the targets, and the Conservatives force local councils to apply them under threats of legal and financial punishments.
“They are trying to pull the wool over our eyes.
“If the Conservatives think that spending 70% of the council budget on vulnerable adults and children’s services is a waste of money, maybe they should tell us which of these vital services they would to cut.
“For the Tories, it’s all smoke and mirrors. They say one thing to our face and then do something completely different behind our backs.
“Our communities are struggling, and it’s the Conservatives’ fault.
“13 years of brutal Tory cuts and failed economic policy are pushing our country to the brink. We are all paying the price. It’s just not fair.
“Whether it’s privatised water companies charging over the odds and dumping sewage in our rivers, mortgage rates and rent costs going through the roof, or being sold a false promise over a new hospital for Warrington…
“The reality is – you can’t trust the Tories in Westminster, and you can’t trust the Tories in Warrington.”
