A WARRINGTON MP is calling on the borough council to prioritise giving contracts to local businesses.
Helen Jones, MP for Warrington North, (pictured) is asking the council to back her calls for a “Warrington First” initiative to ensure more contracts are given to local businesses.
She has written to Cllr Terry O’Neill, leader of the council, asking the borough to do more to support the local economy by awarding more contracts to locally based firms.
She said: “The economy has flat lined over the past year and the local economy in Warrington needs all the support it can get. I have campaigned for some time for the council to adopt a ‘Warrington First’ policy which would see contracts, where permissible, awarded to local firms.”
She said other local authorities, such as Tameside, had implemented similar schemes that have proved very successful.
The MP added: “Under the previous Lib Dem/Tory administration the amount of money the council spent with local firms actually fell by around £10 million per year. I’m calling on the council to look seriously at this proposal and start using more local businesses to carry out work.”
