UPDATED: A road was closed near Warrington town centre early this morning due to police concerns for the safety of a 21-year-old woman.
Cheshire Police have confirmed the road closure was due to concerns over the safety of a person.
At around 2.40am this morning, officers were called to reports of concerns for the welfare of a 21-year-old woman in Warrington.
Officers quickly attended the scene and engaged with the young woman.
Despite their best efforts, the woman fell from the bridge, sustaining serious leg injuries and has been taken to Warrington Hospital for treatment.
Officers who were at the scene have all been offered support and with any incident of this nature, this has been reported to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
The A5061 Liverpool Road was closed in both ways between Milner Street and Crosfield Street.
The incident caused queueing traffic and congestion on many routes through Warrington town centre during rush hour.
As a result of the road closure, diversions were made to the number seven and 110 bus services and traffic was also heavy on various roads across the town including Sankey Way, Old Liverpool Road at Sankey Bridges, Wilson Patten Street and Crosfield Street.
