Labour MP expresses sympathy for Tory counterpart and calls for General Election to end Government soap opera

WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols has joined Labour colleagues in calling for a General Election to bring an end to the “soap opera” Tory Government, following the resignation of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and two of his colleagues.

She has also expressed some sympathy for her Conservative counterpart Warrington South MP Andy Carter, a member of the Privileges Committee, with publication of the forthcoming report into whether Mr Johnson misled parliament, believed to be the catalyst behind his sudden resignation.

Ms Nichols said: “The long-awaited publication of the Privileges Committee report into Boris Johnson’s conduct should have drawn a line under the chaos and dysfunction that ultimately brought down his Government, but has instead unleashed even further instability in Westminster triggering three by-elections including in his own seat and potentially more to come.
“This is a man who shows no remorse, no contrition and takes no responsibility, as evidenced by his resignation on the very day his dubious “honours list” of assorted failures, bullies and sycophants was finally published.
“We will all be better off without him in Parliament, and with a General Election called as soon as possible to finally put an end to this soap opera he is so determined to play the starring role in.”

She added: “I think the way Boris Johnson has impugned the integrity of the Privileges Committee members, including Andy Carter, in his parting shot is an absolute disgrace and is surely contempt of Parliament. Clearly I disagree with Andy on many issues of policy, but we have always been able to work together in the interests of Warrington and I think he’s been treated awfully by Johnson and his acolytes in the way they have sought to undermine not only the Committee itself but everyone on it by extension!

Mr Carter, who has already declared that he will not be standing for election for Warrington South at the next General Election, declined to comment pending the outcome of the Privileges Committee report.
Meanwhile, Mr Johnson claims he is being “driven out” of politics as he announced he was stepping down as an MP with immediate effect.
Ardent Boris Johnson ally and former culture secretary Nadine Dorries dramatically resigned yesterday, quickly followed by the former PM while this afternoon another Johnson ally Nigel Adams also resigned his seat, triggering yet more chaos within the Tory party.
Political commentators are predicting more resignations to follow.
Only a week ago Mr Johnson was out campaigning on the streets of his constituency – as they say – a week is a long time in politics – these days so is 24 hours!
