New market vision unveiled

THIS is how the Warrington Market of the not-too-distant future will look.
This new market will be the first phase of the borough council’s ambitious Bridge Street redevelopment scheme.
As reported exclusively by warrington-worldwide last week, the council’s development partner will be Muse Developments Ltd., who have already carried out major developments in Warrington at Gemini and Lingley Mere.
The scheme is the first phase of the council’s 25 year strategic masterplan for regeneration of the town centre and waterfront area, from Howley Weir to Bank Quay, which was agreed in late 2008.
The six hectare site runs from the west side of Bridge Street to Academy Way in the east, Buttermarket Street to the north and Mersey Street to the south.
It is one of the largest active regeneration projects in the North West and once completed will feature new shops, restaurants, a gym, cinema, foodstore, indoor market, cultural centre, hotel and council offices.
Members of the public, local businesses and other stakeholders will have the opportunity to outline their priorities during a consultation exercise next year.
Work is expected to begin onsite in 2013 though a firm timetable of work has yet to be developed.

  1. It’s not that bad considering it’s just a market and somewhat hidden away from the main Bridge Street area….. it looks rather more inviting than the existing market thats for sure. I just hope the designs for the main Bridge Street developments don’t all incorporate shapeless glass boxes too.

  2. Did an architect design this or was a competition for primary school pupils? What an extremely ugly group of buildings. Where is the vision for the centre of the Town? Why do the materils have to be concrete and glass? Have the developers not heard of bricks? No wonder or brick making firms are going to the wall. Years ago the then WBC insited on bricks being used for Golden Square. Thank goodness they did. Remeber that the developer is only in it to make money!
