“Olde worlde” tearoom will be a memorial to lost loved ones

TWO Warrington care homes are creating an “olde worlde” tearoom as a living memorial to people they lost during the Covid 19 pandemic.

The tearoom, featuring green gingham tablecloths, vintage advertising images, and soft voile curtains to create a welcoming ambiance, will be in the shared garden at Heathside and The Mews in Honiton Way, Penketh.

It was originally created as a visitor pod, allowing residents to safely reunite with their families during the pandemic but now, with the improved situation it is standing unused.
Then the idea of the memorial tearoom was born.

Lisa Ashbourne, recruitment and retention manager at the two We Change Lives homes, said: “We plan to paint the interior and exterior, add shelves, and decorate with nostalgic touches like vintage pictures and fairy lights. We envision a tearoom that captures the essence of the 1950s or 60s, a place that exudes warmth and nostalgia while honouring those who are no longer with us.
“As the project has gained momentum, more people wanted to get involved. Family members of our residents generously offered their skills, crafting a professional sign for the tearoom and assisting with insulation, flooring, and electrical work. Kids Planet in Great Sankey has been incredibly supportive, raising funds through activities like raffles and sunflower competitions. They’ve even donated some much-needed items.

“The tearoom will feature green gingham tablecloths, vintage advertising images, and soft voile curtains to create a welcoming ambiance. We’ll also display artwork by the children from Kids Planet, adding a personal touch to the tearoom walls and infusing it with the spirit of remembrance.
“Our goal is to complete and open the tearoom by the end of July. We’re planning a grand afternoon tea to express our deepest gratitude to everyone involved in making this project a reality. It’s a heart-warming story of a community coming together during a difficult time, united in their desire to create a beautiful space that serves as a lasting memorial for those we lost.
“Beyond serving tea, the tearoom will become a place for meaningful activities such as poetry and shared reading sessions, musical performances, drumming and singing, reminiscence sessions, and family birthday celebrations—a space where cherished memories can be honoured and celebrated.”
