Warning to sunbed shops

OWNERS of sunbed businesses in Warrington are being urged to take steps to ensure under 18s are not using their sunbeds.
Warrington Borough Council is drawing attention to the Sunbed (Regulation) Act which means it is now illegal to allow under 18s to use sunbeds. The new legislation was passed in April this year.
The law was introduced because malignant melanomas caused by excessive exposure to both natural and artificial rays are now known to be the second most common cause of cancer in 15-24 year olds. The risk of melanomas is even higher when sunbeds are used at a young age.
Cllr David Keane the borough council’s executive member for environment and public protection said: “Warrington Borough Council is calling on all young people, parents and businesses to comply with this new law which makes it illegal for under-18s to use sunbeds.
“We would suggest businesses ask for ID if they are unsure of the age of a customer so they are not at risk of breaking the law and incurring a large fine.
“Using sunbeds can pose a serious health risk to people of all ages, particularly young people. Skin cancer can have a devastating long term impact and this law is an important step forward in helping to tackle it.”
