Lib Dem leader urges people aspiring to be a borough councillor to stand for election

FOLLOWING on from the recent Local Elections across much of the country, Local Lib Dem Leader Cllr Bob Barr is urging people who aspire to be a councillor, to put themselves forward for next year’s elections in Warrington.

He says Liberal Democrats results in the local elections on 6 May were well beyond expectations, adding they were “very bad” for the Conservatives, cautiously optimistic for Labour and good for the Greens.

Cllr. Barr said, “There were no elections in Warrington this year. This is because a few years ago, the Labour Council used its large majority to change our system. It moved from election by thirds’, where one third of the councillors were elected in each of three years, with a fourth year without elections, to all-out elections where all 58 councillors are elected every four years. Labour may be regretting that now. It is increasingly difficult to find a candidate for every Borough seat on the council.

“If you aspire to be a Borough councillor and want to help make the decisions about how the town is run, now is the time for you to contact one of the active political parties in the town. Tell them you are interested in standing or helping others to get elected. When we have too few candidates, some inappropriate individuals might be chosen, or residents will not get the opportunity to vote for their favoured party in their ward. Everyone is entitled to stand as an independent candidate but independents usually find it hard to mount a campaign to match that of the main political parties.

“If you miss the opportunity to stand in 2024 you will have to wait until 2028 for your next chance. This is an exciting time for British politics and there are big problems that need to be addressed. Change is needed. If you want to be part of that change, please contact one of the political parties now.”
