Stamping out abuse of the elderly

A COMMITMENT to help stamp out abuse of older people has been made in Warrington.
On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the town’s Safeguarding Adult’s Board manned a stall in Golden Square.
The team offered advice and handed out purple ribbons which symbolised the international event. Staff were spreading the message that “safeguarding vulnerable adults is everyone’s business” and that help is at hand for anyone concerned about the issue.
A council spokesperson said: “Older people who are vulnerable can become a target for abusive behaviour and practices as they are less able to defend themselves.
“Abuse isn’t just physical it can be financial, sexual, psychological, neglect or discriminatory, all of which need to be recognised as abuse and reported immediately.”
Cllr Pat Wright, the borough council’s executive members for health and adult services, said: “Warrington Borough Council is committed to combating abuse and neglect. We want to ensure all vulnerable residents of Warrington are able to live safely, free from the fear of abuse, neglect or victimisation.
“World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an opportunity for us to raise the profile of this important issue and let people know that help is at hand if needed.”
Anyone with concerns about the issue can contact the access social care team in confidence on 01925 444239 Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm, out of hours on 01925 444400 or police on 0845 458 0000.
