LOCAL Media Champions, including Warrington Worldwide, were recognised in a special event at 10 Downing Street recently for their work helping keep communities connected.
Hosted by Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Lucy Frazer, Warrington Worldwide was invited to No. 10 by Warrington South MP Andy Carter.
Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Lucy Frazer said: “Local journalism helps local areas stay connected, generates local pride and keeps communities engaged in local issues.
“Local journalists capture the heart of our communities and make sure politicians are doing their jobs better by holding them to account.
It was wonderful to be joined by local journalists across the country in Downing Street – from community news sites, radio shows and free sheets – to thank them for their work to keep communities connected.”
Warrington South MP Andy Carter added: “It was a great pleasure to welcome Gary Skentelbery to Downing Street to recognise his invaluable contribution to life in Warrington as a Local Media Champion.
“Gary’s family business, Orbit News, has been reporting the news for Warrington since 1968 and is best known for the thousands of free magazines Warrington worldwide and Lymm Life magazine which appear through letterboxes and around local communities each month – as well as the town’s first daily online news service which was launched in 1999, one of the first in the U.K.
Gary and his business make a great contribution to life in Warrington, allowing advertisers to reach their customers, promoting good causes and positive news about the town and being fair in his reporting, even the most controversial topics.”
