Chester Road swing bridge sticks again – causing more traffic chaos

THE Chester Road swing bridge by the Stag pub stuck again today, causing more traffic chaos in the local area.

It is the latest in an ever-increasing number of incidents involving the swing bridges across the Manchester Ship Canal in Warrington.

Today’s incident resulted in a boat not being able to get through until the bridge was opened manually. This then had the knock-on effect of causing traffic chaos on the local road networks in south Warrington with heavy traffic reported in the Stockton heath and Loushers Lane areas of town.

Local residents took to social media to vent their anger and frustration at the ongoing problem. One resident reported seeing an ambulance with blue flashing lights having to make a u-turn.
Traffic was also reported gridlocked on the A49 northbound.

Bridge owners Peel, had pledged to carry out repairs, starting with the Stockton Heath one, which would have resulted in a nine-month road closure, which had been scheduled to start this month. But Warrington Borough Council refused to carry the cost of any road closures.
Warrington South MP Andy Carter has urged both parties to sit down and find a solution.
He is also due to meet with Peel again soon to discuss the issue.
