THE Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Jean Flaherty laid a wreath at Soldiers’ Corner in Warrington Cemetery to commemorate the anniversary of Anzac Day, on Tuesday April 25.

Anzac Day commemorates the anniversary of Australian and New Zealand forces landing at Gallipoli during World War One, in 1915, and the thousands who gave their lives.

Soldiers from all over the Commonwealth are buried at Soldiers’ Corner, as Winwick Hospital was taken over as a military hospital during the First World War.

As the first citizen of the borough, the Mayor marks the anniversary by laying a wreath at Soldiers’ Corner at Warrington Cemetery. She was joined by veterans and local cadets and members of the public at the annual event.

Cllr Flaherty said: “During these uncertain and challenging times, it’s important that we continue to recognise the contribution and sacrifices of those who lost their lives during the First World War.
“I took the opportunity to have a moment of quiet reflection to remember those who have served their country, and continue to do so, and I would encourage everyone to do the same.”
‘Anzac’ stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
