Social money-lender scoops award

A SOCIAL business that operates from Contact Warrington has scooped a prestigious national award.
Moneyline won “Responsible Lender of the Year (short term loans)” at an awards ceremony.
Warrington Borough Council and Golden Gates Housing Trust provided funding to help set up the service in Warrington, as well as the Department of Work and Pensions, to offer an alternative to people who may be tempted to go to a loan shark.
Ian Clough, chief executive at Moneyline, said: “Staff take the time to talk to customers face-to-face about their income and expenditure. They often come to us for Christmas, school clothes or trips, a replacement cooker or washing machine, sometimes a holiday.
“These are not big sums but they make an enormous impact on the quality of life and standard of living of our customer. The aim of this service is to remove the temptation to approach loan sharks.”
Cllr David Keane, the borough council’s executive member for environment and public protection, added: “I am delighted that Moneyline has been recognised in this way. This is a valued service for our residents and I fully support any initiative that prevents people from approaching loan sharks.”
For more information about this service, and to find out if you are eligible for help, call 01925 443322 or visit Contact Warrington on Horsemarket Street.

  1. Why re-invent the wheel? We already have Credit Unions that offer very low interest loans. It would make more sense for these bodies to be supporting them.

  2. council tax payer on

The Council seem to always want to duplicate what other people are doing which dilutes their activity. I agree that the best place for people to be directed to is the very good Credit Unions in the Town. The moiney spent via Contact Warrington could be used on some other worthy activity. The Executive Member ought to have known this. If not, he should make himself aware!
