THE latest phase of residential development on the site of the former Burtonwood airfield, Warrington, is set to go ahead following approval of a detailed planning application.

Outline planning permission had previously been approved in December 2020 to deliver up to 617 homes on residential phases at Omega South.

The move sees phase seven of Omega South approved by Warrington Council, enabling Bellway Homes Ltd (North West Division), supported by planning consultancy Lichfields, to develop a range of 2 and 2.5-storey detached, semi-detached and terraced residential properties, as well as a three-storey apartment building on the former airfielde.
It will feature a mix of 146 three, four and five-bedroomed market properties built on a 5.9-hectare plot.

Plans for a three-storey building, which will accommodate 12 affordable apartments, together with a range of 37 one, two and three-bedroomed homes to boost the supply of affordable local properties, have also been given the green light.
Each property will have a dedicated parking space for residents while those living in the apartment block will a secure new central parking court. Access to the development will be via a new, recently completed spine road on the site’s southern boundary.
The wider Omega development is a major regional regeneration project, delivering new houses and community shopping and leisure facilities, set within 35-acres of landscaping, woodland, parkland and wildlife on the site of the former RAF airfield.
Work on phase seven is due to start onsite as soon as possible, creating a number of new jobs in the construction and local supply chain industries.

Clover Long, senior planner at the Manchester office of Lichfields, who secured approval, said that the new homes would make a significant contribution to meeting the identified housing needs in the Warrington area.
She added: “This new phase of development will deliver sustainable, accessible housing, in close proximity to good local services and facilities in Westbrook and Great Sankey. We are delighted approval has been granted and now look forward to a range of housing types, tenures and sizes across the market and affordable sectors being developed.”
