THERE was a record turnout of volunteers for the annual Spring litter pick organised by the New Cut Heritage and Ecology Group, Woolston.

More than 26 volunteers – aged range seven to mid-80s – spent most of a day giving the New Cut towpath and nearby Paddington Meadows their annual sprint clean.

The day is timed to take place before the vegetation grows, covering up much of the litter and debris in readiness for the bird nesting seasn.
Organised in conjunction with Warrington Borough Council, the operation had an almost military style with all necessary equipment – litter pickers, plastic bags, hoops etc – available at both Woolston Lock and Paddington Lock.
Volunteers worked towards the New Cut Lane area where the council was on hand to l pick up and remove all the materials collected.
Every area, even nearby pathways in residential areas and the Paddington Meadows network had a complete clean.
The most significant finds were a three-piece suite in bushes near Larkfield Bridge, gas cylinders and a huge tyre.
The group has seen increasing financial support for equipment from local parish councils as the increasing use of the towpath and meadows by walkers, runners and cyclists continues.
A group spokesperson said: “The use of the paths by cyclists avoiding the A57 as they go to work has to be a bonus for road safety in the area.”
