Rugby club wins planning permission for new floodlighting

WARRINGTON Rugby Union Club has won planning consent for floodlighting and new changing facilities at its ground in Bridge Lane, Appleton.

The decision by Warrington Borough Vouncil’s development management committee will mean the ground – which has been lying idle for years following a fire which destroyed the original clubhouse – can be used again for training and matches.
But the club’s main ground will continue to be at Warrington Sports Club at Walton Lea.
The new floodlighting will replace an old installation which is no longer fit for purpose.
Changing accommodation and storage facilities will be provided in two converted shipping containers.

Over the years, the ground has been plagued by anti-social behaviour. Police have often been called to deal with disturbances.
There were no objections to the scheme, although Appleton Parish Council expressed concern about the impact of floodlighting and car movements on nearby houses
Two members of the public supported the application but were concerned about the appearance of the shipping containers.
Warrington RUFC has about 350 members, from pre-school age to adults, from all over the borough.
