His Lordship…the gardener!

A RARE opportunity to find out about one of Cheshire’s finest gardens – only a few miles from Warrington – will raise money for charity.
Lord Ashbrook is hosting an evening at Arley Hall and Gardens that will take a light-hearted look at the art of gardening.
Guests can find out more about his family – which has owned the estate for 500 years – the historic stately home and award-winning gardens.
Lord Ashbrook will share his own knowledge and passion for gardening, built up over a lifetime at Arley.
Proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Leonard Cheshire Disability charity, which operates services across the country.
Lord Ashbrook said: “The gardens at Arley have been a passion for my family for more than two centuries and I am looking forward to sharing this with local gardeners, lovers of local history, or anyone who would like to come along for an enjoyable evening.”
Arley’s gardens have developed over the last 250 years, with each generation of Lord Ashbrook’s family helping to shape what can be seen today.
Lord and Lady Ashbrook have also put their own stamp on the gardens. Lord Ashbrook is an avid collector of plants and has amassed a collection of 300 varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas, which he is constantly adding to.
The gardens, featuring the famous double herbaceous border which is thought to be the first of its kind planted in England, were named a garden of distinction in Cheshire’s Year of the Garden scheme in 2008 and are among the top 50 in Europe and in Britain’s top 10.
They also boast the Ilex Columns, Walled Garden, Rootery containing the roots and stumps of ancient trees and a working kitchen garden which holds 100 different types of vegetable and salad.
“The thing that makes Arley unique is that it is a family garden – essentially it is a very large back garden,” said head gardener Gordon Baillie.
The event will be held on Tuesday, May 17, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Tickets cost £19.95 each, including refreshments. For more information or to buy tickets call 01565 777353 or visit www.arleyhallandgardens.com.
