DURING a visit to Warrington Home Secretary Suella Braverman met the police officers first to respond to Brianna Ghey’s murder.

The Home Secretary, who was also in Warrington to launch the Government’s national strategy to crack down on domestic abuse, thanked the officers for their work to quickly apprehend the two suspects, who have now been charged with murder and remanded into custody awaiting trial in July.

Accompanied by Warrington South MP Andy Carter, the Home Secretary also spoke with Chief Constable Mark Roberts QPM and Warrington Borough Commander, Superintendent Adam Ross about Cheshire Police’s recent strategy which has led to an increase in arrests across the area.

The Home Secretary, Suella Braverman MP, said:“It was deeply moving to meet with the Cheshire Police officers who were first to respond to Brianna Ghey’s murder during my visit. It’s thanks to the first-class work of these officers that two suspects were quickly arrested and charged. I join everyone in Warrington in sending my heartfelt condolences to Brianna’s family and all those who knew her.”

Mr Carter said:“I’m really grateful that the Home Secretary was able to take the time to come to Warrington to meet with local officers. We have more officers on the streets across Cheshire today than at any time in the recent past and I’m reassured, having spoken to the Chief Constable Mark Roberts, that the Police are totally focused on tackling crime at all levels. Arrest rates in Cheshire are up, the number of people being charged is up and the conviction rate is up.”

The Home Secretary was also in Warrington to launch the Government’s national strategy to crack down on domestic abuse which includes a change to the law which will see measures to ensure that Courts will be able to tag offenders of domestic abuse, as well as adding offenders of domestic abuse onto the violence and sex offenders register.
