UPDATED: THREE shoplifters who were caught by police following a foot chase across the front lawn at Warrington town hall, yesterday, appeared in court today, Friday.

The three offenders were spotted in a town centre store stealing nearly £1,000 worth of coats while a Town Centre Beat Manager was in the premises taking a statement on an unrelated matter.

One foot chase through the town hall front lawn, some shouting and help from other officers resulted in three arrests for alleged shoplifting.

This morning, one offender was sent to HMP for 18 weeks, another received a suspended sentence of 12 weeks, and the third received a Conditional Discharge.

Highlighting the incident Warrington Police posted on social media:

“It is perhaps not the best idea to enter a Town Centre store in order to steal nearly £1000 worth of coats when a Town Beat Manager is in store taking a statement about an unrelated matter.
One foot chase through the Town Hall front lawn, a little bit of shouting, some help from other officers. Now we have three under arrest for alleged theft.”
