A WARRINGTON woman who falsely claimed more than £32,000 benefit has been given a suspended prison sentence and ordered to repay the money.
Debbie Haughton, 47, of Helmsdale Lane, Great Sankey pleaded guilty at Warrington Crown Court of failing to declare that her partner lived with her.
The court heard she was overpaid housing benefit of £12,112, council tax benefit of £2,666 and income support of £17,788 – a total of £32,566.
She was sentenced to 30 weeks in prison, suspended for twoyears, and order to repay the money.
After the hearing, Adrian Webster, the borough council’s benefits manager, said: “Deliberately withholding information that affects your claim is stealing. “That’s why we are targeting benefit thieves. We’re closing in on benefit thieves with every means at our disposal.”
