Warning after distraction burglary

POLICE at Warrington are warning people to be on their guard following a serious distraction burglary in the town.
Two men arrived at the home of an elderly couple in Dudlow Green Road, Appleton, on the pretext of carrying out fence repair work.
They gained access to the property and searched a number of rooms before stealing a quantity of cash. Officers are appealing for anyone with any information about the incident, to get in touch.
Detective Inspector Matt Durcan said: “We want to reassure members of the local community that we are doing all we can to trace those responsible.
“We are urging residents – particularly the elderly and vulnerable – to be extra vigilant when answering the door to any unexpected callers.”
People are being advised to keep doors locked at all times and be wary of unexpected callers. Officers advise using a door spy hole or chain to check visitors, where available.
Police also advise against keeping large quantities of cash in the home, and to check the identification of callers from organisations. They say if people are unsure to get the organisation’s phone number from the book (not to use one supplied by the caller) and call to check. If people are still unsure, they should call the police.
