Travellers vacate Great Sankey leisure centre site as new encampment blocks public footpath

UPDATED: TRAVELLERS who arrived at Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub on New Year’s Day have now vacated the site, following a court order – as another encampment arrived at nearby Whittle Avenue, blocking a public footpath!

The encampment of nine caravans and associated vehicles arrived on the Warrington Borough Council owned car park of the leisure centre on New Year’s Day – but left yesterday after the council secured an eviction notice.

But shortly after leaving the site another encampment of at least six caravans arrived on nearby Whittle Avenue.
Local residents complained that the encampment at Great Sankey hub was causing a nuisance, with dogs being allowed to run free, snapping at local school children, while large amounts of refuse were being left in the area.
As a tidy-up operation began, a new unlawful encampment arrived on the council-owned land on Whittle Avenue.
Welfare officers are to attend the encampment as soon as possible.
