POLICE have extended their appeal for further information across Cheshire and Merseyside, including Warrington, after a 15-year-old girl was wounded by a pint cup filled with coins at the Manchester City v Liverpool football match.

On Thursday 22 December 2022, officers received reports of a young girl being wounded by a cup filled with coins at the Manchester City F.C v Liverpool F.C. EFL game.

It is believed the cup was thrown inside the Etihad Stadium at around 8:25pm from the upper tier, containing Liverpool fans, down to the lower tier in the stadium, which subsequently hit and injured a 15-year-old girl causing a 1-inch laceration to her head.
The girl, a Manchester City fan, was taken to hospital where she received medical attention and is likely to be scarred for life.

Greater Manchester Police are appealing to the public for further information to help us locate the person responsible for this malicious attack.

Superintendent Gareth Parkin of GMP said: “GMP will not tolerate violent or malicious behaviour in any situation, this does NOT exclude football matches or sports games.
“Clearly throwing objects in a confined area can be dangerous and have serious and sometimes devastating consequences.
“We are continuing to investigate this incident and would urge those who attended the game who know who is responsible or could have any information to assist us further, to please come forward.
“You can report any information to us by calling 101 or report information online via our reporting tool on our website: www.gmp.police.uk quoting log 1880 of 22/12/2022.

“Alternatively, you can report information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Liverpool’s chief executive, Billy Hogan, had since telephoned the girl’s father to apologise. He has also thanked the dozens of Liverpool Football Club fans who have contacted the family with kind messages of support in finding the perpetrator.
The father, who is protecting the identity of his daughter, posted images of her blood-stained scarf and the pint cup made from toughened plastic, on social media in a bid to catch the person responsible.
