Students tackle mock crisis

WARRINGTON students were set a task which almost exactly mirrored the current crisis in Libya – how to tackle a conflict on foreign soil where UK civilians were at direct risk.
While the United Nations was taking action to protect civilians in Libya, public services students at Priestley College were going through a mock process of forming their own fictional government.
The exercise was carried on campus during a visit by Andy Gilman, head of the Ministry of Defence education outreach programme.
He said teams of students the problem of tackling a conflict overseas – a familiar scenario in recent months in various parts of the world.
After being given briefing notes about the fictional crisis, each student was appointed to a role on the cabinet and then had to brief their peers about various solutions at a mock press conference.
Mr Gilman said: “I have been a regular visitor to Priestley College and once again I was really impressed in the manner the students tackled this scenario.
“The concept really got the students thinking on their feet and working in a team at a time when much of the issues they were discussing, such as humanitarian aid, deployment of troops and foreign diplomacy, are the ones we see on our television screens on a daily basis.”
