Campaigners delighted as new traffic calming measures set to be introduced at Orford

CAMPAIGNERS say they are delighted with proposed new traffic calming measures along the entire length of Hallfields Road at Orford, including speeds humps and a 20 mph limit.

The proposals come after a u-turn earlier this year when Warrington Borough Council scrapped a proposed bus-gate following protests from local residents.

The council says that for many years, residents have expressed concerns about the need for traffic calming measures in Hallfields Road.

Presently there are no physical restrictions along the route and it is used as a connective route as an alternative to Smith Drive due to that road having an Access Only order in place. Officers have also received a petition and face to face discussions took place before the Covid outbreak and the scheme was subsequently set back due to the deliberation of other schemes being considered in the immediate area.

Commenting on the proposals, Rachael Harper from the Warrington Residents Opposition to the Central 6 Street Plan campaign group, said: “We are delighted that the council has listened to the local residents in Orford and surrounding areas on this. We fully support the implementation of speed bumps and a 20mph speed limit on Halfields road because it’s a great compromise.
“It helps to calm the traffic and makes the road safer at the same time. This is what should have happened all along; the council and residents working together to solve a problem in OUR town.
“We are hopeful that we will see a similar outcome on Grange Avenue in Latchford, where the council can work with residents in this area. That’s why we’re still going ahead with our peaceful protest demonstration on the 5th December to support the people of Latchford in front of the full council. We’re also willing to support other ways of making our town greener, without restricting road access because we know just how important the climate change movement is.
“I’m so proud of what we have achieved in Orford as a campaign group. It shows what can happen when democracy is at the forefront of social justice and local politics. Now let all Warringtonians come together for the people of Latchford and let’s see what we can achieve there!”
It is now proposed to provide traffic calming features by way of round and flat-topped humps and a 20mph limit as identified in the schedules below.

Warrington Borough Council has given notice it proposes to make an Order under Sections 1, 2, 4 and 84 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and of all other enabling powers. The effect of the Order will be to introduce a 20 miles per hour speed limit on Hallfields Road for its entire length.
