Plans approved at historic Pickering Arms

A SERIES of planning applications involving the historic Pickering Arms pub at Thelwall have been given the go-ahead by Warrington planning chiefs.

The work had, in fact, been completed before the applications were submitted.
But Warrington Borough Council planning officers were happy that they respect the character of the Grade 2 Listed building and gave approval restrospectively.
The pub is believed to have originally been a 17th-century coaching in. Although various renovation projects have been carried out over the years it is still and essential part of the centre of Thelwall village.

A plaque on the gable end of the black-and-white half-timbered building states: “King Edward the Elder founded a city here and called it Thelwall.”
The alterations have provided rope and post fencing, new railway sleeper steps with handrails and railway sleeper flower planters.
It is not against planning law to carry out work in advance of receiving planning consent, but the applicant runs the risk of having to dismantle the development if the application is subsequently turned down.
