Warrington Town prepare for FA Trophy clash with South Shields

WARRINGTON Town will renew rivalry with South Shields at Cantilever Park this weekend in the FA Trophy.

The Yellows beat South Shields in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to reach last season’s Northern Premier League play-off final, where they lost to Scarborough.

The two sides have enjoyed a respectful rivalry since South Shields joined the league in 2018.

It was against South Shields that Warrington Town won the 2019 play-off final, though they were cruelly denied promotion due to the super play-off that season.

South Shields won both league games between the two sides last season, and also won on penalties in an FA Cup clash between the two sides in September 2020.

Both teams currently sit in the play-off positions, while South Shields may have an eye on their televised FA Cup first round clash with Forest Green next week.

The Yellows prepared for the game with a penalty shootout defeat at Stalybridge Celtic in the Cheshire Senior Cup.

Josh Amis cancelled out Stalybridge’s 54th minute goal within a minute, but was then later sent off for a clash with Celtic goalkeeper Greg Hall.

That meant they finished the game with nine men, as centre half Teddy Mfuni had previously seen red for two yellow cards, but it was 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Stalybridge prevailed 5-3 on penalties to avenge the 1-0 defeat they suffered in the league back in August.

Club officials are still waiting to learn whether Amis and Mfuni will be forced to miss any league games following their red cards.

Defender Mitch Duggan played last night, despite being sent off against Lancaster City last week, which suggests that the senior cup is not implicated by league red cards, and vice-versa.

Winger Isaac Buckley-Ricketts is hoping to return to light training this week after appendicitis, but striker Jordan Buckley is still out with an ankle injury.

After the game with South Shields, the Yellows have back-to-back away games against Guiseley and Whitby Town.

Meanwhile, the club has announced that Saturday’s game will be pay on gate only, with no tickets available to purchase online.

The turnstile prices are £12 adults, £8 concessions and £3 under 16s.

Warrington Town FC was also revealed as one of the property squares on the new Warrington edition of world-famous board game MONOPOLY earlier this week.
